We leave Perth City and head east to the Swan Valley via the historic town of Guilford; a colonial inland port established in 1829. The Swan Valley may be the oldest wine region in Western Australia and home to over forty world-class wineries but our focus this afternoon is not alcohol but chocolate, honey, nougat, coffee and nuts all produced locally by members of Perth’s incredible multicultural community each with an amazing passion for the products they make.
Our first stop for the afternoon features two separate outlets which produce and sell in the one location: a delicious array of Italian nougat and cakes at Mondo Nougat plus an amazing selection of sweet and savoury- coated nuts at Morish Nuts. From small beginnings, both Alfonso Romeo and Archie Moroni have built highly successful business enterprises with fantastic and innovative products, loyal clientele and excellent export potential. Take your time to view production, taste some free samples and browse the shelves for your favourites.
For over forty years, Whistlers, Western Australia’s oldest chocolate company, has been delighting its patrons with their tantalizing chocolate creations; lovingly displayed in their purpose-built and expansive Swan Valley showroom a few minutes away. Sample and buy the popular product lines, marvel at the awesome chocolate displays created by the very talented Ian Sargent in the Cocoa Lounge, purchase some gorgeous gifts or relax with a coffee or ice-cream. The choice is yours!
A little further up the Swan Valley we visit the House of Honey: the realisation of a lifetime dream of Kenyan-born apiarist Rupert Phillips and his queen-bee Kim. See the bees busy at work in the observation hive and learn about the amazing health benefits of honey. All honey is locally harvested from bushland locations producing some very unique flavours which you can taste. Honeycomb, honey-based skin and cosmetic products and other bee- related gifts are also for sale.
The last two outlets we will visit this afternoon both started business in the Margaret River Region, in Western Australia’s South West. Yahava was the brainchild of Alex Kok, a Dutchman whose passion for coffee has taken him all over the world to discover the best beans which Yahava roasts to perfection, carefully grinds and brews to make indescribably good coffee. Experience a roasting and a coffee tasting.
