New Norcia is a township of magnificent, Spanish-influenced, heritage-listed buildings, olive trees and church bells nestled in a picturesque valley in the heart of the Western Australian bush. Established 1847 by Spanish Benedictine monks as a mission for the Aboriginal people, New Norcia has been a centre of education for indigenous and non-indigenous children and is currently home to an active Benedictine monastic community. Arrive New Norcia to join the 2-hour Township Walking Tour with your local guide: a wonderful opportunity to learn the unique history, photograph the amazing Spanish –influenced exteriors and see the hidden treasures kept behind closed doors of the many heritage buildings including the intricate work of Spanish woodcarver Juan Casellas and the stunning frescoes of monk-artist Fr Lesmes Lopez
After lunch, take a leisurely stroll to the nearby Museum, Art Gallery and Gift Shop. You will have plenty of time to view the amazing collection of paintings by Spanish and Italian masters, priceless manuscripts, religious artefacts or be tempted by the Gift Shop displays of New Norcia bread, nut cake, almond biscotti, olive oil products and wines
On the return drive to Perth, we take the time to make a scenic detour through the undulating and very picturesque Chittering Valley. The vista changes at every turn as we wend our way past citrus orchards, grazing pastures, vineyards, spring-time wildflowers, hundreds of grasstrees and the meandering Brockman River
